About us

Everyone is welcome
from beginners to
experienced observers.

Like most local Societies, we exist mainly as a forum for satisfying our own personal interest and enjoyment of the subject we’re passionate about: Astronomy.

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Our meetings are held  at Surrey University, Lecture Theatre M. The meeting will also be streamed to members via Zoom.

Every month we have a guest speaker and usually a presentation of what you can expect to see in the night sky during the month.

Our next meeting will be held on
7th May at 19.30

“The Legacy of Gaia”

Dr. George Seabroke

May’s sPEAKER:

Dr. George Seabroke.

.

The European Space Agency (ESA) satellite Gaia was launched in 2013 and mapped our Milky Way Galaxy until its retirement in 2025. Its three trillion observations of two billion stars are still being used to produce five papers per day, making its ESA’s most scientifically productive mission (twice as productive as Hubble). I will introduce the mission, Mullard Space Science Laboratory’s contribution, some science highlights, a historical coincidence and how observers (including several from Guildford Astronomical Society) successfully imaged the Gaia satellite, when it will be seen again and how observers and anyone can still be involved in the Gaia mission.

Dr George Seabroke is a Principal Research Fellow at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL), University College London (UCL). He gained an undergraduate Master in Science (MSci) in Astronomy at UCL in 2003 and his PhD at the Institute of Astronomy and Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge in 2007.

What our members say…

I joined GAS in the middle of the pandemic 2020 after receiving a telescope as a gift and needing some help in setting it up. Everyone has been so helpful and give their time up so freely, it has been a joy to be part of them!

Andrea Wellbelove

Novice astronomer

“I enjoy the wide variety of the lectures, especially those on historical topics, and find the talks accessible to a lay person (though I’m sometimes stretched by the maths/science). Pre-Covid I was an occasional guest to live meetings, I joined during the pandemic and will maintain my membership – it’s good value and outreach sessions are great fun.”

“The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great, and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich, precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment.”
